There has been a lot of research over the years about how people can improve their sense of wellbeing. The new economics foundation was commissioned by the Government’s Foresight project on Mental Capital and Wellbeing to develop a set of evidence-based actions to improve personal wellbeing. They outlined the five key ways to wellbeing as:

  • Connect – social relationships are important for promoting wellbeing
  • Be active – regular physical activity is associated with better mental health
  • Take notice – being ‘in the moment’ can help with perspective and better self-awareness
  • Learn – continued learning enhances self-esteem
  • Give – helping others makes us feel better too

In the spirit of giving Penny Hayler Psychology Ltd is now a proud member of the QUAD 100 Club in Derby! Membership of the QUAD 100 club gives local businesses the opportunity sponsor a local outreach programme, which supports local people, particularly from disadvantaged communities. Derby QUAD says:

“The aim of the QUAD 100 Club is to raise funds that support QUAD’s programme of outreach work, which helps transform the lives of young and old people, the disadvantaged and those in hard to reach communities.”

The charity MIND states that participation in social and community life has attracted a lot of attention in the field of well-being research, as individuals who report a greater interest in helping others are more likely to rate themselves as happy. There are a number of ways that people can think about giving to improve the lives of others as well as themselves. Try these ideas:

  • Helping other people with daily tasks
  • Saying thank you or letting someone know they’re appreciated
  • Volunteering in the local community

Seeing ourselves and our happiness linked to the wider community can be very rewarding and creates connections with other people.
