Many years ago a well-known telecoms company changed the way that they looked at their services.  They wanted to capture the essence of communication and subsequently launched a marketing campaign with the strapline ‘It’s Good to Talk’. Interestingly, they decided that they were no longer a telecoms company or in fact a technology company.  They looked at the human elements and potentially the emotional impact of the services that they provided and described this as ‘reciprocating confidences’.  So when people use a telephone there was a human exchange and sharing of confidences through verbal communication. The implication:

Lives and relationships are vastly improved when we talk

Now in our fast-paced, often pressured world of technology, where every person can access infinite data on their phones, often becoming isolated or retreating inward, it is more important than ever to talk. After all, a problem shared is a problem halved.  With around 1 in 4 of us experiencing mental health problems this year, we need to take the time to talk.  Sometimes it’s the life-altering situations that hit us the hardest and sometimes it can be a series of seemingly small things, that in isolation may have barely registered any impact at all.  However, any of these things seem a little less frightening, overwhelming or intimidating when you can share them. Whether it’s with friends, family, work colleagues, professionals or social media, each outlet has its own merits.

As Time to Talk Day approaches its useful to reflect on how we communicate both personally and professionally. This can often be in times of indecision, challenges or crisis. Time to Talk Day encourages everyone to start a conversation about mental health. Not only is it ‘Good to Talk’, it’s essential for positive mental health.
