EMDR is a psychotherapy technique that is used to relieve psychological stress. It is mainly used for those who have experienced psychological trauma for example, those in a severe car crash. It is thought to be particularly effective in patients that struggle to talk about their previous experiences a lot and therefore directing eye movements when thinking about negative memories can weaken the connections between emotional reactions and thoughts.
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF TRAUMA?
The signs of trauma that some people may experience can be signs of vivid flashbacks of the serious incident, intrusive thoughts, panicking when reminded of the incident, physical sensations such as pain and sweating. Signs can also include areas of avoidance, such as using alcohol or drugs to avoid the memory and avoiding anything that may remind them of the trauma – for example, not driving again if you were in a serious car accident that caused suffering.
